He first worked in Turkey in 1969 at the classical site of Knidos. He then worked for the Smithsonian Institution on excavations in the Near East before directing his own field research in the same. His major research, from 1975 -1990, has been in sub-Saharan Africa where he directed a major scientific research team investigating the effects of global climatic change on human evolution during the last five million years.
